If your loved one is having difficulties producing certain sounds then this is considered an articulation impairment. An articulation impairment consists of substituting one sound for another (i.e., "tup/cup" or "wing" for "ring"), omitting a sound completely (i.e.,saying "ook" for "look") or any other type of sound error.
If your loved one is showing a consistent pattern of a sound error, this might be considered a phonological processing disorder rather than an articulation impairment. There are many different phonological processes. An example, a final consonant deletion is where the last sound in a word is consistently dropped (i.e., "jee" for "jeep"). The term "fronting" is example of another phonological process where a sound that is produced in the back of the mouth such as "k" is consistently replaced with a sound made in the front of the mouth such as "d" (i.e., "doe" for "go".
Does your loved one demonstrates difficulties with word finding, have difficulties telling a story? Or perhaps they have challenges taking in new information, forming new memories and following through on new tasks? Speech therapy can assist with teaching the use of memory aids and compensatory memory strategies that will improve cognitive/communicative functions.
Receptive language refers to an individual's ability to understand spoken language. This is usually observed as difficulties understanding spoken words, sentences, conversations, responding to their name, and even following directions. Expressive language refers to an individual's ability to express communication. Expressive language delay is a difficulty with expressing communication via words, sentences and conversations and through nonverbal means such as pointing and gestures. Speech and Language Solutions offer therapy to teach strategies to increase and improve an individual's receptive and expressive language skills.
Some language difficulties can affect social skills such as turn taking during conversation, giving appropriate eye contact, asking and answering all types of questions and overall appropriateness of communication. An individual with a pragmatic language disorder may have difficulties initiating communication for a variety of intents including requesting items, sharing information, gaining attention and commenting appropriately.
Some have disfluencies(pauses and minor repetitions) in their speech which occurs during preschool years. However, if an individual has a large number of disfluencies in their speech, it may be an indicator that they have a stutter. Stuttering on more than 10 words out of 100 may indicate that the individual is having a problem. Other factors must also be considered , but a speech language pathologist must evaluate and treat to make a solid diagnosis.
